So, as some of you may know, I recently acquired a vintage Wonder Conn from 1915. It had new pads and for the most part seemed fine... That is, until I tried the octave mechanism.

I was completely unusable! It destroyed the upper register and if I didn’t hold the octave key on the neck down, the same happened to the lower register.

I was now SOL with this, as I don’t have the money to throw into fixing this horn. So months go by, I sit and poke at it here and there, the mechanics of it going far over my head.

And again, I came to it to prod and attempt to fix what seemed unfixable (for me, at least). Out of the blue, an idea struck me. I began putting makeshift cork here and there (since my repair kit is currently on loan) and WHAM!, the damn thing works... Well, at least the octave keys work. I have yet to play test it.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow morning’s practice.

Rantings and this and that, etc. For now I’ll just leave you with a scenic photograph of the grand city of Chigago (featuring the then under construction Trump Tower in the skyline) while I continue whittling away on the rest of the site in the dark while it pours outside.

I love Chicago rain.
